In this topic students will learn about how we classify organisms in the animal (Animalia) Kingdom. We classify animals into 2 categories - vertebrates (have a backbone) and invertebrates (have no backbone). Students will then learn about the 5 Vertebrate classes that belong to Phylum Chordata. These are mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish and birds. Students will watch a video which explains the 5 vertebrate class groups and how we classify them.
To show students the difference between animals with and without a backbone the following PowerPoint shows a selection of animals with and without backbones. When looking at this PowerPoint put it on slideshow and follow the instructions to see a picture of an animal and then see the Xray image of the same animal.
